If the "curb alert" doesn't do the trick, you could try Freecycle. It's a listserv where you can post descriptions of stuff you're trying to keep out of the landfill, and interested people e-mail to arrange for pick-up (or you can just leave it on the curb, as you've done). I've recycled several large bags of packing peanuts and bubble wrap that way.
