Shop Without a Bag Day

I don’t live on the West Coast, but I completely support the towns and counties in and around Los Angeles that have declared today, December 20th, as Shop-without-a-Bag Day. They’re encouraging residents doing any last-minute Christmas shopping to bring a reusable bag with them to the store today in hopes that folks will get into the habit of bringing reusable bags every day. Yes, this is a green move for the environment but also to protect one of California’s natural gems–the sea lions, which often make the fatal mistake of consuming plastic bags.

Visit the Heal the Bay website for more information on where local residents can pick up free reusable bags.

Great concept. Having a semi-official day to celebrate going “bagless” is a good way to let people know how easy it is.

How do I love my NON PLASTIC shopping bags? Let me count the ways:

    1. Each canvas tote (I got mine for 99 cents at Publix)stands on its own.
    2. Each bag holds about a gazillion times the amount the flimsy, wasteful plastic bags hold.
    3. Each bag has long handles that I can pull up to my shoulders.
    4. If I forget to bring them IN to the store, I can ask the clerks to put the groceries into my cart without the plastic bags, get to the car, open about 4 of my canvas bags and unload the groceries from the cart, straight into the totes.
    5. I don’t have to recylce those awful bags.
    6. The bags are perfect for my job as food stylist–I can pack food in one bag, equipment in others and lug them into the studio with ease.
    7. Did I mention how much each of them hold?

Honestly, I don’t have the faintest idea why it took me so long to get around to this. Really, EVERYONE, if they tried it once, would love using these bags.
