This past weekend the kids and I splurged by seeing a first-run movie in the theater. Normally, we would wait until a movie is out on video or we could order it OnDemand from Comcast, where four of us can enjoy a movie for about a buck a head. However, with it being summer vacation and all, I figured it wouldn’t hurt our budget too much to see a movie like normal, non-frugal families see a movie.
What helped to make this excursion affordable is that my youngest (and her little friend who was with us) is still young enough for a kid’s ticket and we went during the matinee and we had a Regal gift card that knocked $30 off the price of our tickets. In the end, I paid $8 out of pocket for the tickets, plus $11 for popcorn and soda. At least I’d fed the kids beforehand so they weren’t clamoring for more overpriced movie concession food.
So what movie did we see? “Wall-E,” the new computer animated film from Disney and Pixar. Without revealing too much about the story, I will tell yo this: “Wall-E” is the greenest movie of the summer as far as I can tell, and some movie critics already agree. That’s because the robot called Wall-E is designed to clean up trash that Earthlings have left behind. Wall-E, which stands for “Waste Allocation Load Lifter–Earth Class,” does an awesome job of tidying up the place and building beautiful trash skyscrapers in the process.
While I’m sure your kids will love the story–told almost like an old-fashioned silent movie but with plenty of communicating going on–I’ll bet that they’ll leave the movie theater wanting to ensure that their planet never gets as garbage filled as the Earth shown in the movie.
