I disagree that it is 'bad manners' to not bring a gift. Actually, the 'gift' is the person's presence at the party, and some people would argue that it is bad manners to expect a gift. Though I would certainly NEVER show up at a birthday without one.

Another rule: if you purchase multiple items at once, make sure you distribute the RIGHT gift receipts to the right people! Last year, I received a very nice sweater that just happened to be almost identical to one I already owned. I had a gift receipt, so I thought it would be nice to just go exchange it for the same sweater in a different color. (Note that will be important later: It just so happens that the gift giver had given different sweaters from the same store to multiple people that year.) So I got online and found the nearest mall housing the store in question - about 60 miles away from my home. My husband and I made a day trip of it, but when I arrived, the sales clerk informed me that the sweater listed on my gift receipt did not match up with the one I was carrying. As a result, I would have to be considered a "no receipt" returner, which meant, at this particular store, I could make an even exchange or get store credit for 1/2 of the current sale price of the item. There was not a single one of these sweaters left in the store in any color, and I was not allowed to exchange for a different style that was the same price. To add insult to injury, the store credit I could obtain, given that there was a big sale going on, would have totaled about $6. So, I just ended up owning two identical sweaters for a while before finally donating one to charity. Bummer!
