Encouraging Retailers to Give a Bag Credit

I’m working on reaching out to national retailers to find out why they do or do not offer a credit when a customer brings a reusable bag. As soon as I’ve got more information on that, I’ll write a new post and hopefully come up with a comprehensive list of stores that do rewards shoppers who bring their own bags.

In the meantime I found this form letter on Reusablebags.com you can use to send to your favorite retailer to encourage them to give customers a bag credit.

According to this post, Costco gives a bag credit, something I did not know.

So, let me get this straight–at Costco you can pack your groceries in their boxes for free but if you bring bags, you save money? Wish BJs did that! (That’s where I’m a member.)

Stay tuned.

    Speaking of retailers and credits…

Starbucks gives 10c when you bring your own mug.

I had no idea! Too bad I’m too cheap to take myself out for coffee! ;-)

I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a credit at Costco for using my own bags. I’ll have to keep an eye out.

I’m usually too busy begging them to use boxes or to bag as much as they can with my cloth bags. I’m one of those stock-up types, and it makes me mental to carry one item at a time over and over again.

    1. Take from shelf, put in cart
    2. Take from cart onto conveyor belt
    3. Take from cart into car
    4. Take from car into house

That gets REALLY old when your cart is super full.

Since they track so much data from swiping your card, I wish they could flag me as “That lady who always asks for XXX, or YYY” so that I didn’t have to grovel for help each time.

Stop and Shop (East Coast) also gives five cents per reusable bag that you bring in. We have about 10 green reusable bags (of course, purchased from Stop and Shop) and end up getting about 50 cents off our order. Not much but we use that to throw into a rainy day fund.
