My boys (1 year old and 2 year old) will be farmers this year--flannel shirt, blue-jean overalls, a kerchief, and a little animal (one has a pig and another a rooster) attached to the overalls. If they were older I would add a straw hat.

(I was inspired by my husband who always calls the boys "farmers" when I put them in overalls!)

Another "easy" outfit that was popular down south, but they probably wouldn't "get" up here in NYC is a blackened eye and a white T-shirt with a "P" (drum roll..... black-eyed pea).

One year Sam was a lady bug: black tights (or leggings); red turtle neck with black iron-on round patches for the spots; antennae fashioned from a headband and black pipe cleaners. Cute as a bug!
And another year she was a fairy: white tights, white turtleneck; wings fashioned from wire hangers and platic wrap and a magic wand fashioned from a dowel with a foil-covered dowl. We never once bought a costume. For years we had storage boxes filled with costume elements (wigs, shawls, hats, capes, etc.) so we could put something together for any occasion.

Black garbage bag, cut armholes and hole for head. Stick mini cereal boxes all over it with knife wounds (ok, not for kids this one) and you have a "Cereal Killer".
