I read all the comments on another site and made these changes:

- let the Italian bread, cut up, sit on the counter for a full day so it was nice and hard
- gave it plenty of time (5 minutes per batch) to soak up the liquid in a bowl before layering into crockpot, NO extra liquid added to crockpot
- added a splash of vanilla to liquid and held back the brown sugar
- cooked on high for two hours, then "stirred it," then cooked for two more hours on low with lid a bit open to let out the steam

Results? All gobbled up!
