On a recent visit to Lowe’s, my husband couldn’t believe the great prices he found in the nursery area. And he just had to call and tell me about it.
“How do you feel about spirea,” he asked, when he called me on my cell.
“Love it,” I replied, thinking of the spirea with the pinkish-purple flowers we had in the garden at our old house–and had to leave behind.
“How do you feel about spirea for five bucks each?”
“Love that even more.”
By the time his shopping trip was over, Bill had bought a half dozen spirea plants ($30), plus a dozen or so other containers of ground cover, each priced at $1. Yes, you read that right–a buck each. I plan to add them to hillside garden I’d started last summer after our construction project was complete.
Why am I tell you this? Because if you’re thinking of doing some landscaping during these dog days of summer, now would be a great time to take advantage of the end-of-summer plant sales at your favorite home improvement shop or nursery. Maybe you’ll luck out and get a garden’s worth of plants like we did for about $40!

Where did Bill get such great plant deals?
Lowe’s! And they were on the “distressed” plant rack. I’m heading outside now to plant them all.
awesome! Thanks for the tip. I think I’ll go there tomorrow.
Trim the spirea back and it will bloom again for you.
Another frugal tip- the big box stores have bags of mulch and various soils that have been damaged by their lift-truck jockeys. They often put the broken bags together on a pallet and sell the lot really cheap. The biggest problem is that a lot of the check-out personnel don’t know about this. Make friends with the garden center manager and the purchase will go smoother.
Just be prepared to handle dirty, open bags. I got over 30 bags of mulch for $12.00 and a little work to open the bags and blend the colors together.
