Back-to-School Freebies

Remember that infographic I posted on how much American families are going to spend on back to school? It was frightening, wasn’t it?

There is no way I’m spending the $689 that he National Retail Federation says is what American families will be spending this year. I mean, that’s the reason I’ve been highlighting the Staples penny deals each week and will continue to do so for as long as Staples is offering them on back-to-school supplies.

Anyway, a number of retailers are throwing in back to school freebies to help American families save on their shopping. Here are some biggies for this coming weekend!

Free iPad at Abercrombie and Fitch. If A&F is on your kids’ back to school shopping radar, be sure to visit one of their retail locations on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday through August 2nd. That’s because Abercrombie & Fitch is giving away 1,000 free iPad tablet computers to shoppers on those weekend days, through Labor Day.

Free Apple Gift Cards. Apple has two back-to-school freebie offers worth mentioning. Any college student who buys a new Mac before September 21st will get a free $100 Apple gift card, or who buys a new iPad will get a free $50 Apple gift card. You can get details on how a student can qualify for these freebie deals on Apple.com.

Free Kids Haircuts at JC Penney. You’ve heard me mention this before in my Freebie Friday roundups–JC Penney is offering free kids’ haircuts during the back to school season. What I neglected to mention was the age restrictions (kindergarten through 6th grade only), and that you must make an appointment for a free haircut.

Free Flu Shots and Health Screenings for Kids. K-Mart, CVS, and Sam’s Club (with pharmacies) are all offering free health screenings and/or free coupons for a flu shot at some point this weekend.

Free Sunglasses at Aeropostale. When you shop at Aeropostale on Saturday, August 11th, Teen Vogue says that if you mention the code “BTSS” at checkout, you’ll get a free pair of sunglasses–while supplies last.

Tax-Free Shopping Days: Shoppers in Georgia and Maryland have tax-free shopping days starting at some point this weekend. Texas and Connecticut will have tax-free shopping in the coming weeks. You can get a comprehensive list of tax-free shopping days occurring in August here.

Free Back to School Calendar. Remember: you can get a free back-to-school calendar from Vistaprint to help you get the school year off on the right foot–or the right page!

Free Shipping and Cash Back. If you’re going to do your back-to-school shopping online, go through a cash-back portal like Ebates. Right now Ebates is offering double cash back from certain retailers who have items your kids might need to go back to school. You can also find free shipping coupons on Ebates.

If you come across any other back to school freebies, post a comment to let us know.
