Day 2: Year of Renewed Frugality

If you’re like most people, you’ve made at least one New Year’s resolution for 2013. And chances are those resolutions have something to do with health–be it eating better, quitting smoking, or getting more exercise.

Going with this last resolution of getting more exercise, today’s frugality tips as part of the Year of Renewed Frugality have to do with ways to get free exercise. That’s because you don’t have to join a gym to get fit. There are plenty of ways you can get your daily exercise and stay true to your frugal habits.

For starters, do you have a dog? Walking a dog is great exercise for the both of you, and completely free to do.

What about gaming systems? If you’ve treated your kids to a Wii or another gaming system, you can “play” their games to get your exercise. For example, I’ve been spending about 20 minutes a day playing “Just Dance”–we have Just Dance 1-4–and let me tell you: in addition to being fun, it’s a great workout.

Can you attend an exercise class for free? At this time of the year, health clubs will be trying to find ways to entice you to join. If you ask you might be able to swing a free pass for a day or a week. Two national chains are offering free passes right now–Curves and 24 Hour Fitness. Please see the ad boxes below to click through for your free pass. If you’re not interested in trying a class at a club, what about at your local house of worship?

Just doing chores around the house can add up to free exercise–and it saves you money on a cleaning service. Vacuuming, dusting, gardening, cleaning up your yard–these all burn calories and help build strength.

If you work at home like I do, you can always set up a treadmill desk to kill two birds with one stone–getting work done and getting your daily exercise. My husband built this treadmill desk for me for the cost of a board and two clamps.

Let me know if you have additional ideas on how to get free exercise.
