Popular Father’s Day Gifts

giftsDo you have a favorite go-to Father’s Day gift? When my kids were little, we always went with something handmade.

For example, for my husband’s very first Father’s Day, way back in 1996, I made a t-shirt for him that said “My daddy lets me walk all over him” and include my daughter’s footprint on the shirt (yes, I’d put acrylic fabric paint on her feet and had her “walk” on the shirt). Another time I used both my daughter’s hand prints on the matte around a framed photograph we gave him.

These days we’re more likely to go with store-bought gifts, including this year’s gift, which I can’t reveal so as not to spoil the secret.

Seems store-bought gifts for Father’s Day are very popular.

Offers.com, a leading coupon and deal site, recently polled dads on their favorite Father’s Day gifts, plus asked what their favorite activities to do on Father’s Day are. Here are the results:

Top Four Father’s Day Gifts:

  1. Clothing – 39%
  2. Gift Cards - 30%
  3. Tools – 18%
  4. Electronics – 13%

“Every year leading up to Father’s Day, we see a nearly 27 percent increase in clothing deals, so it’s not surprising more dads will be receiving a new wardrobe this year,” says Howard Schaffer, vice president of Offers.com in a press release.

Top Father’s Day Activities:

  1. Go out to a nice dinner - 46%
  2. Watch sports – 21%
  3. Play golf - 20%
  4. Play with your kids - 13%

This year the National Retail Federation says we Americans are going to spend just under $120 on Father’s Day gifts. How are you planning to spend your money and what kind of gift do you think you’ll give the dad in your life?

This year we’ve asked the kids to provide services for coupons instead of buying gifts (e.g., mow the lawn, vacuum the floors, etc.) This saves money and prevents the accumulation of clutter.

      I love that idea!

This year our gift of choice was something my husband specifically asked for–a replacement for something he owns and loves but used so much that it has worn out. So as soon as he opens the new gift, the old item is going in the trash!
