Being interviewed on camera.

As you start to do your back to school shopping, have you considered hitting up your local thrift store or consignment shop? You might be surprised at the savings you can find.

Here we are comparing towels at Impact Thrift Stores.

For example, last week Amy Buckman from Saving with 6ABC (a program on the ABC affiliate here in Philadelphia) met me at the Impact Thrift Store in Feasterville, Pennyslvania, one of the East Coast’s largest thrift stores. We were there to tape a segment on how you can shop for back to college at a thrift store. (That segment should broadcast this Thursday.)

I brought along my daughter Jane since she will be leaving for her freshman year at college in a few weeks. The staff at Impact had pulled together a number of items on Jane’s must-have list using items they found on the Impact shelves to show how much you can save when you shop at a thrift store. The biggest mind blower? The same Arm & Hammer mattress cover that we’d seen at Bed, Bath and Beyond for about $35 was only $3.99 at Impact Thrift Stores! (Here’s my piece on Parade.com about furnishing a dorm room on a budget.)

If your kids are looking for extra cash for back to school shopping, now is a great time to suggest they consign their clothing or sell it to a resale store like Plato’s Closet or Buffalo Exchange. While they’re there they might even find some gently used (and affordable) clothing and accessories they can wear for the first day of school.

Finally, if you have a kid who is moving off campus in college, hitting up a thrift store for home furnishings is a must. It’s a frugal and green way to get what you need for a house.

Speaking of frugal and green, this week’s Parade.com column profiles The Chew‘s Evette Rios, who shares her secrets for shopping thrift stores. I hope you’ll check it out.
