Decluttering in 2014

Happy New Year to my Suddenly Frugal readers. I keep seeing so many people talking about how horrible 2013 was and how not to let the door hit the year in the you-know-what on the way out into 2014. I’m so sorry to hear that 2013 was such a bad year for most. I guess our family is lucky in that 2013 was much better than 2012, and here’s hoping 2014 improves even more over 2013.

I’m not one for big New Year’s resolutions (though I did write this piece for Parade on 7 New Year’s resolutions that save $9,000), but I understand the notion of giving a year a fresh start. For me I have to say that I would like to continue on my path to decluttering in 2014, which is the notion behind my book Toss, Keep, Sell!: The Suddenly Frugal Guide to Cleaning Out the Clutter and Cashing In.

Now that I’ve got a kid in college, you can imagine how much money is going out to pay tuition and other college-related bills. And I’m feeling like decluttering and selling my stuff on eBay, Craigslist, or via another method probably won’t bring in enough cash to cover tuition, but every little bit will help. Also, decluttering on a regular basis, something that Marla Cilley aka The FlyLady preaches, helps to keep your home neat and organized and easy to live in. As she says, “You can’t organize clutter.”

I have lots of other personal reasons for decluttering in 2014 that I won’t get into here. But as I go through and I find some gems, I’ll be sure to share the details of what I did, how it worked for me (financially and otherwise) and how it can work for you, too.
