5 Post Valentine’s Day Sale Ideas

February 15, 2013

I hope that my posts before Valentines Day, on how to save money on flowers and where to go for freebies, helped to make your Valentines celebrations affordable. Believe it or not, even with Feb. 14 come and gone, there are still ways to save money.

Now is the time to take advantage of after Valentines Day sales to save for next Valentine’s Day–yes, Valentines 2014–but also in other areas of your life.

Here are 5 post Valentine’s Day sale ideas and why you should consider stocking up at these sales.

  1. Red candies. Do you do a lot of baking? Do you like to entertain? Chances are that if you answered yes to each, you would be smart to stock up on candies that can help you with both, especially when they are on sale after Valentines Day. For example, chocolate candies in red coatings–who says they have to be for February only? Stock up on them and stash them in your freezer so, come Christmas, another holiday featuring red, you’ll have all the red goodies you need for holiday baking, and you will have purchased them at a discount. Similarly, you can put those candies out in party dishes in December.
  2. Red decor. Who says that February is the only time of the year when you can decorate your home with red decor? I’ve seen plenty of interior design pictures featuring heart-shaped pillows or blankets and throws with hearts on them. These are especially great to use in girls’ bedrooms, or in a kids’ playroom. Even home stores that were pushing red linens might have them on sale now. You may like red anyway. So why not use this opportunity to replace worn out sheets, blankets or tablecloths with new red ones that you can purchase on the cheap.
  3. Red wrapping paper. While Valentines Day isn’t quite up there in traditional gift-giving and gift wrapping as Christmas and Chanukah, it is possible that stores will have marketed red wrapping paper as a must-have for gift giving. If you happen to stumble upon solid red wrapping paper that’s marked down on clearance, snap it up–it will do nicely for Christmas or, frankly, any other gift-giving occasion for which you need wrapping paper.
  4. Clothing with hearts on them. My teenagers don’t have to wait for Valentines Day to wear sock or undergarments with hearts on them. They think they’re cute all year long. If you have young ladies in your life who might enjoy heart socks as a stocking stuffer in December or anything else with hearts on them, pick them up now.
  5. Heart-shaped items. If you’d always wanted to invest in a heart-shaped cake pan or muffin tins, be on the look out for those items to be marked down in the coming days. Rather than wait till next Feburary to finally buy them, do it now when they’re dirt cheap. Also, are you planning a wedding in the near future? Post Valentines Day sales are ideal for purchasing items that you could use as favors, centerpiece, decorations or anything else that you might want to use at a wedding or bridal shower. I mean, besides Valentine’s Day, a wedding is a love-filled day where no one would find it weird that in the middle of June you have heart-shaped candy dishes out, filled with pink and red candies (also purchased on sale after Valentines Day).

Of course, suggesting that you use after Valentines Day sales to stock up for future holidays or gift-giving occasions assumes you have a system in place at home that allows you not to lose or misplace these items in the interim.

For food stuff that you’ll store in the refrigerator, I would recommend designating a Rubbermaid-like container for your frozen stash. And for future holiday presents, now is a great time to finally set up your gift closet–your go-to place for finding last-minute gifts. If you have one space in your home dedicated to this notion of holding future gifts, you’ll never find yourself running around the house in December, asking, “Now where did I put those cut heart socks I got in February on sale?”

A great post. I talked to a friend of my husband’s last night and he actually put it best when he called yesterday, ” it’s Half Priced Chocolate Day Eve.”
If you’re a chocolate fanatic, today is definitely your day.

Thank you. I’m glad you agree. My husband promised me I’d get plenty of Valentine’s Day chocolate–on February 15th. I love my frugal guy!
