Keep or Toss: Tax Time

Spring has officially arrived, which means it’s time to clean house! According to a recent study offered by American Cleaning Institute, 74 percent of Americans believe in the spring cleaning tradition. That study found that the number one motivator for spring cleaning? Maintaining a a pleasant appearance (71 percent) in your home. Gee, for me, spring cleaning is all about throwing open the windows and letting spring’s fresh air fill my stuffy home. Whatever your motivation is for spring cleaning, you may be tempted just to start tossing clutter. (Actually, you should be trying to sell or make money...

Toss, Keep, Sell 2.0 on the “10! Show”

May 6, 2011
By

Yesterday, I returned to the “10! Show” to talk about my book Toss, Keep, Sell!.  However, this time, instead of talking about my stuff and what I should toss, keep, or sell, I went through host LuAnn Kahn’s things to help her clear out her clutter and cash in. Wait until you hear the big-bucks surprise I discovered in her laundry basket of stuff that she brought with her to the set. Last Thursday I appeared on the “10! Show” on NBC 10 in Philadelphia to bring the advice from my new book Toss, Keep, Sell! to life. I detail that advice in a Home Goes Strong blog posting (that’s my paid blog for NBC Universal) and included a link to the actual segment. Basically, I touched on 5 ways to get cash for your trash and they are: Consign your clothes twice a year Look around your home office for hidden money makers Get over gift guilt Sell unwanted videos and DVDs (Disney classics do great on eBay) Invest in...

Getting Cash for Your Trash

March 2, 2011

As you likely know by now, the premise of my newest book Toss, Keep, Sell! is to teach readers not only how to declutter their homes but also how to get cash for their trash. One method for doing that, which everyone knows about, is having a yard sale. But do you know the right way to have a yard sale? Check out this recent Mint.com story Turning Trash into Cash: 5 Tips for a Successful Yard Sale, which includes some advice from yours truly. Also, if you live in the Philadelphia area, be sure to tune into 6ABC’s...

Two More Stops on the Blog Tour

The Toss, Keep, Sell! blog tour stopped in at two very different blogs today. One blog, Project Happily Ever After, author Alisa Bowman writes. She got the idea for the book Project: Happily Ever After: Saving Your Marriage When the Fairytale Falters when she decided to “make over” her marriage and went from wanting her husband dead (figuratively, of course) to falling back in love with him. The book gave birth to the blog. Alisa allowed me to guest post on how decluttering your bathroom can improve your morning and your relationship with your family members. The other blog...

In the past couple of days, a number of different websites and blogs have hosted a Q&A and with me, and/or a guest post from Toss, Keep, Sell! Organizing Your Home Office

February 15, 2011
By

I’ve been writing a lot lately about getting home office clutter under control. Maybe it’s still part of my thinking about New Year’s Resolutions or the fact that so many of my friends have been posting on Facebook about getting their own home offices back into fighting shape. For Home Goes Strong, my paid blog, I provided tips on neatening your home office. In another Home Goes Strong post, I espoused on the importance of owning a shredder. (If you’ve ever wondered about creative ways to reuse shredded paper, check out this long-ago blog post on just that topic.)...

The Happiest Mom Welcomes Toss, Keep, Sell!

My latest stop on the Toss, Keep, Sell! virtual book tour was over at The Happiest Mom. I think founder Meagan Francis did a terrific Q&A. I believe it provides some real insight into the book–and hopefully whets people’s appetite to pick up a copy. (While you’re over at Meagan’s website, pre-order her newest book–One Year to an Organized Life with Baby: From Pregnancy to Parenthood, the Week-by-Week Guide to Getting Ready for Baby and Keeping Your Family Organized. If you would like to do a Q&A with me on Toss, Keep, Sell! or any other subject, drop me a...

Decluttering Your Freezer Over on Words to Eat By

Today’s guest post on the Toss, Keep, Sell! blog tour is over on Debbie Koenig’s blog Words to Eat By. The post focuses on decluttering your refrigerator and freezer by figuring out when it’s time to toss food that is past its prime and how not to throw out perfectly good food in the future by learning how long certain things keep. Debbie even taught me a thing or two about shelf life–I didn’t know you could freeze eggs! I hope you’ll go check out the post! Today’s stop on the Toss, Keep, Sell! blog tour finds me over at Frisco Kids, written by the smart and talented Debbie Abrams Kaplan. (Debbie was a guest blogger here in September, when she wrote a post on getting massages at a discount.) My guest post for Frisco Kids focuses on decluttering kids books and movies, including where you can go to make money on them and what you need to know if you’re interested in swapping old books and movies for new ones. Debbie’s even added some Bay Area resources for her readers who are interested in this...

Blog Book Tour Planned for February 2011

One of the most efficient ways for authors like myself to promote their books these days is to do something called a blog tour or virtual book tour. Basically, we guest post on other people’s blogs as a way to provide free content to blogs that want it and to get the word out about our new books. As you likely know I’ve hosted many guest posts for authors in the middle of blog tours, such as these posts from the recent past: December 2010 guest post on living frugally and green from Victoria Klein, author of the new...

Use the Hanger Trick (from Toss Keep Sell)

Want to know what one of our biggest clutter problems in our house is? Too many clothes. With too many clothes, there is always too much laundry to do. With too many clothes, my children are faced with too many getting-dressed decisions, and they are often so overwhelmed that they try on and then toss aside articles of clothing that we should have donated long ago. That’s why today’s daily decluttering tip, from Toss, Keep, Sell!: The Suddenly Frugal Guide to Cleaning Out the Clutter and Cashing In, focuses on your clothing, and how you can use the hangers in...

Declutter Your Spices (from Toss, Keep, Sell)

Today’s daily decluttering tips from my new book Toss, Keep, Sell!: The Suddenly Frugal Guide to Cleaning Out the Clutter and Cashing In focus on spices in your pantry. You may not know this but like anything else that you might use to make a meal, spices have an expiration date. That’s the bad news. The good news is that expired spices won’t make you sick like, say, expired milk can, but they also won’t flavor your meal in ways that you expect. In other words they may add no flavor to your meal. And then where are you...

5 Reasons to Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet

Last month the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) sponsored a drug-disposal day whereby people could properly get rid of any expired or unneeded prescription medicines. Called National Take Back Day, it included 3,400 participating sites and, by all accounts, was a huge success. Providing people with a safe way to dispose of their prescription medications helped to keep Americans from taking expired medications and flushing those old medicines down the toilet–bad for our waterways. While that September event targeted prescription medicine, it’s also important to clean out your medicine cabinet on a regular basis, looking for expired over-the-counter medication–or worse,...

My apologies to the Suddenly Frugal blog readers about the lack of posts these last two days. The galleys for my newest book Toss, Keep, Sell!: The Suddenly Frugal Guide to Cleaning Out the Clutter and Cashing In are due back at the publisher on Wednesday, having only arrived at my home office last Friday.
