Rite Aid Offers Free Skin Cancer Screening

Rite Aid has once again kicked off its free skin cancer screening program. Volunteer dermatologists will be doing these skin cancer screenings as part of the Road To Healthy Skin Tour. The Tour, which will provide full body and potentially life-saving skin cancer screenings from the comfort and privacy of one of the RV’s two exam rooms, takes place in a spacious customized 38-foot recreational vehicle. As The Skin Cancer Foundation’s flagship early detection program, the Tour also aims to raise skin cancer awareness and educate the public about the importance of prevention and early detection. July 15 is Amazon Prime Day

This week, Amazon turns 20 and on the eve of its birthday, the company introduces Amazon Prime Day, a global shopping event, offering more deals than Black Friday, exclusively for Amazon Prime members in the U.S., U.K., Spain, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Canada and Austria. On Wednesday, July 15, new and existing members in the U.S. will find deals starting at midnight, with new deals starting as often as every ten minutes. For the longest time I didn’t see the value in an Amazon Prime membership. Then my oldest daughter went to college in New York and she needed to buy textbooks....

Free Slurpee at 7-Eleven 2015

It should come as no surprise that July 11 or 7/11 has come to be known as 7-Eleven Day–as in a day that celebrates the founding of a favorite convenience store named after that date. And like in years gone by, 7-Eleven is celebrating 7-Eleven Day (its 88th birthday, by the way) by giving away a free Slurpee to customers that visit that day. Note: this freebie is for a small size only. You can pick up your celebratory free Slurpee drink at participating 7-Eleven stores nationwide from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on 7/11/15, while supplies last. Will...

How Product Reviews Changed How We Shop and Buy

Are you like me in that you rarely buy anything these days–or book a hotel room or make a restaurant reservation–without first reading product reviews? I know that review-based shopping has changed my buying and spending habits, and I’m ok with that. I first started using product reviews about 20 years ago, when my husband and I were in the market for our first new car. We purchased a subscription to Consumer Reports so we could have access to the magazine’s database of best cars. To be honest every time we need to buy a car, we turn to...

8 Free Donuts for National Doughnut Day 2015

Whether you spell that round, fried confection donut or doughnut, chances are you love them. And what better way to enjoy something you love then to get it for free? Well, Friday, June 5 is National Doughnut Day 2015, and plenty of chains and businesses are going to be giving away free donuts. I usually wait for this sweet freebie day, held the first Friday in June, to indulge in some doughnuts, though I have been known to troll the clearance aisle at Giant or Stop and Shop to see if there are any boxes of donuts on the...

Weather Disaster and Your Taxes in 2015

Next month is Hurricane Preparedness Month–because hurricane season officially starts on June 1. Yet so much of the United States has a weather disaster happening right now, and not in the form of a hurricane. Mostly filling up my Facebook feed these days are cries for people in Texas to head to higher ground, thanks to all that flooding. Good thing the Internal Revenue Service sent out a tip sheet today on how a weather disaster may affect your taxes–in a good way. That is, you may be able to deduct certain losses from a weather disaster on your...

7 Memorial Day 2015 Freebies & Deals

When I think about Memorial Day, I think about the town where I grew up, which always held the best Memorial Day parade. It helps that, as a kid, my Girl Scout troop marched in this parade, so it always held a special place in my heart. The town where I’m living now has a big Memorial Day parade, and it includes a parade of festively decorate bicycles for cyclists young and old. Will your Memorial Day 2015 include watching a parade? Of course, watching a parade is free. And it turns out there are a number of other...

Target College Registry

My youngest daughter is heading to college in August, and this week we received her welcome packet. In it is the list of “suggested” items the school believes incoming freshman will need to live in the dorm. Having already sent one child off to college, I know a bit better. And I know how handy it could have been to have had a college registry set up before that first one left. Our family members were very gracious is wanting to buy things for our daughter’s dorm room, but some of them were sadly out of touch with today’s...

6 Frugal Beauty Hacks

As I was getting ready to go out recently–fixing my hair and putting on makeup–it dawned on me that much of my beauty routine truly reflects my frugal lifestyle. I mean I’m not brushing my teeth with raw baking soda to save money, or making my own soap from leftover fat. But since starting the Suddenly Frugal blog in 2007 (anniversary coming up on 6/6/15), I have gathered a number of frugal beauty tips. Some I’ve shared with you in the past; others I have not. I figured now was a great time to revisit some of those ideas,...

10 Mother’s Day 2015 Freebies

Did you know that Mother’s Day, always the second Sunday in May, is the most popular day of the whole year to dine out? Half of all Americans will treat mom to a meal on Mother’s Day 2015. In fact, says the National Restaurant Association, “dinner the most popular meal period to dine out, and that six in 10 consumers who plan to celebrate the occasion by dining out will do so at a relaxed, casual dining restaurant.” Turns out dining out is one of the things that mom wants on Mother’s Day. According to the annual Ebates...
