Penny Deals are Back at Staples

July 14, 2012

Penny deals are back at Staples, and as the mother of two school-aged children, I couldn’t be happier.

Ever since my daughters started school, I have been able to stock up on school supplies without spending a lot of money by taking advantage of Staples’ penny deals. (I mention Staples because that is the office supply store closest to me. I’m sure other stores offer similar deals.) Each summer Staples advertises its penny deals in its Sunday circular, and usually limits what is on sale for a penny to a few select items. Each week those items change.

What that means for parents like me, who want to get basic school supplies without spending big bucks, is that you have to do mini school shopping on a weekly basis, so that you can take advantage of the penny sales.

In the past Staples would simply price items at $.01, with a limit on how much you could spend. I can remember picking up six spiral notebooks for $.06–six being the limit–but now you have to spend a minimum amount of money to get the penny deal. This year that amount is $5, and there is still a limit on how many items you can buy.

For the week starting Sunday, July 15th, here are the three items you can get for a penny at Staples:

  • Staples brand lined writing pads, yellow or white (normally $1.49)
  • Avery insertable 5-tab dividers, the kind you use in a three-ringed notebook (normally $1.49)
  • Avery one-inch binders (regularly $2.99)

With each of these deals, you are limited to two per customer, and it says you have to spend a minimum of $5 to get the penny deal. What I’m not clear about is if you can spend $5 and get all three penny deals, or you need to spend $5 X 3 or $15 in order to get all three penny deals. Nonetheless, I plan to cash in some of my Staples Extra Rewards bonuses, which I earn for recycling my print cartridges at the store, to help offset my back-to-school spending.

Speaking of recycling, this year Staples has a new recycling program that allows you save even more money on back-to-school shopping–Staples will recycle your old binders for you. For each old binder you bring into the store, you will get $2 towards the purchase of a new binder that day. I know we have some pretty beat up binders around our house!

In addition to the penny deals, there are other specials for back to school at Staples this week worth noting; you can see them all for yourself on the Staples website but here are some highlights:

  • Staples manual pencil sharpener
  • 30-count West Wipes
  • Plastic rulers
  • Staples translucent pencil box

  • Staples compass or protractor
  • Staples dry erase markers
  • Expos dry-erase board cleaner
  • 5-pack Zebra Z-Grip retractable ballpoint pens

I’m hoping to give you a weekly heads up on these kinds of deals as the back-to-school season gets into full swing.

Thanks for the tip on the savings card. I wasn’t sure it was worth buying but now I’ll give it a second look.

Just went to Staples today. They have another deal where you can spend $10 to get a 15% discount card on office supplies good through some time in September (you can use multiple times). You’ll break even when you spend $67. Note, you can’t use it on certain items like ink, calculators and some other items. Make sure you keep an eye on prices as they ring up. I noticed that they overcharged for one item I bought, which it turns out was on sale LAST week, but the sale sign was still up. And some of the $1 items from the circular had $3 signs on them, though they rang up properly at $1. The cashier said they got 2 huge truckloads of items, and not enough manpower to keep the store running properly.
