Tax-Free Shopping in Mississippi Today

July 28, 2012

Back-to-school shopping is tax free in Mississippi today. Actually, Mississippi’s tax-free holiday began on Friday, July 27th and goes through midnight tonight, Saturday, July 28th. (Sorry to my subscribers in Mississippi who are getting this blog post too late to take advantage of this deal.)

If you choose to go back-to-school shopping in Mississippi and avoid sales tax today, keep in mind–not everything that you might be buying for your kids for school is tax free.

Mississippi says that “clothing and footwear items, meant to be worn next to the body and cost less than $100 per item, are exempt from sales tax during this period.”

  • School supplies (ironic, I know)
  • Computers and technology
  • Sports equipment
  • Jewelry
  • Handbags
  • Wallets
  • Watches
  • Backpacks

Though traditional school items do not qualify during this sales tax holiday, if you need new clothes and they cost less than $100 per item, this might be a good day to go shopping.
